Directing the Unexplained: Feathers

Timeline: 2 weeks

Overview
A collaborative project between myself, fellow illustrator Anjelica Maglinao, and the author Madeline Nixon. Feathers is a very personal and somewhat whimsical recounting of the author’s relationship with the paranormal. I had the opportunity to be the art director for the project, creating and drafting the initial concept for Feathers. I also created graphics for elements inside the book, page breaks, and offered revisions for Anjelica’s illustration.

Process
We had sat down with the author and discussed the concept of the book, the significance of the title and were given a pdf to read.  On pen and paper I sketched  out thumbnails  with Anjelica  with the idea in mind that we wanted to create something unsettling and supernatural but but also somewhat fun and approachable.

With the author on board, Anjelica had taken our thumbnails and created a draft of the artwork, I gave her my revisions that would help further convey the concept. I had also illustrated the feather details and handled font selection.

Conclusion

Working cohesively with another illustrator to created a cover design that complimented a delightfuly spooky retelling of a life steeped in the supernatural.
